Why NASA Still Names the Future After Ancient Gods

When a civilization wants to cross a threshold, it rarely does so in plain technical language. It may build rockets, write code, draft budgets, test fuel systems, and calibrate trajectories to the decimal point, but when the moment comes to name the mission, it reaches for something older than engineering. Something that predates institutions, survives empires, and still carries enough symbolic authority to make the unknown feel legible.
That is why NASA, one of the most advanced scientific institutions in the modern world, still sends its machines into the void under names borrowed from Greek and Roman antiquity. Not because scientists secretly live in temples, and not because mythology is a decorative flourish added for public relations, but because technology alone does not authorize meaning. It only authorizes function. The deeper human act is not merely to build the vehicle, but to declare what kind of passage it is.
This is where the Names matter.
The Apollo program program was not named by accident. NASA’s own historical material traces the choice to the early space age, when the mission needed a name proportionate to its scale, and Apollo, the god associated with light, order, and the solar chariot, was deemed appropriate to the ambition of carrying human beings beyond Earth. The symbolism was reinforced in later mission identity itself, where Apollo was explicitly associated with extending “the light of knowledge” through lunar exploration.
Decades later, when NASA prepared to return to the Moon, it did not invent a sterile corporate label or a neutral acronym designed to offend no one and mean nothing. It chose Artemis program, and NASA has stated clearly why: Artemis is the twin sister of Apollo and the goddess of the Moon in Greek mythology. In institutional language, she now “personifies” NASA’s path back to the lunar surface. That is an extraordinary sentence for a scientific agency to publish, because it reveals something most modern systems try to hide: institutions still rely on archetypes when they want to move history.
The official explanation is straightforward enough. Apollo was linked to the first great era of lunar exploration. Artemis signals a return, but not a repetition. NASA explicitly connected the name to a new phase of exploration, including the symbolic and political importance of sending the first woman to the Moon.
But the deeper meaning is not administrative. It is civilizational.
A society that still names its frontier missions after gods is quietly admitting that pure rationality is not enough to carry collective ambition. Rockets can move mass. Myth moves people. A launch vehicle can leave the atmosphere, but only a story can tell a civilization why the crossing matters.
This cound sound irrational. But it is structurally human.
For thousands of years, the sky was measured and narrated. The planets visible to the naked eye were named after deities long before modern science separated astronomy from astrology, observation from symbolic imagination. Even today, NASA’s educational and science materials still reflect that inherited architecture. Planets remain tied to Greek and Roman mythological naming traditions, and the broader solar system continues to be populated with names drawn from ancient cosmologies, whether Greek, Roman, Norse, or others depending on the body and convention.
In other words, the modern scientific project did not replace the old symbolic order. It climbed through it.
That continuity is more revealing than it first appears. Because once a machine leaves Earth, it enters a domain where human language becomes unstable. Space is too large, too cold, too abstract to be held by engineering terminology alone. “Orbital insertion,” “payload deployment,” and “trajectory correction burn” may describe what happens, but they do not absorb what it means for a species to leave its cradle and try to touch another world. Myth steps in not as superstition, but as a continuity bridge between measurement and meaning.
This is why these names endure. They do not merely label missions. They dignify thresholds. Keep authority beyond beaurocratic ages
And this is where the Roman-Greek blend becomes especially interesting.
Most people say “Greek god names” casually, but the Western naming system in science is actually a layered hybrid. Much of the ancient sky-language inherited by modern astronomy comes through Roman naming conventions built on Greek archetypes. So the names are not always “pure Greek” in any strict sense. They are the result of a civilizational relay, where cultures translated, adapted, absorbed, and repurposed older symbolic material rather than discarding it. The result is not confusion, but continuity. Rome operationalized what Greece mythologized. Modern science inherited both.
That is a useful metaphor for space programs themselves.
A mission is mythology operationalized through bureaucracy. It is poetry strapped to procurement. It is a god-name moving through welding schedules, congressional funding, simulation software, and human nerves. The modern state may pretend to be secular, neutral, and procedural, but at the edge of the unknown, it still reaches for sacred language. Not always religious language in the formal sense, but archetypal language. Language that says: this passage matters enough to be remembered.
And there is something quietly honest in that.
Because if NASA had called its return to the Moon “Lunar Surface Deployment Initiative Phase II,” everyone would have understood the budget, and no one would have felt the threshold.
“Artemis,” by contrast, activates an atmosphere. It tells the public, the engineers, the astronauts, and perhaps even the institution itself that this is not merely transport. It is the inheritance of the past with new technology. It is continuity with a new language. It is a species speaking to itself in the oldest available register while pretending to speak only in numbers.
That does not weaken science and definetly it is not pseudo science. It reveals its human frame.
In fact, one of the great misunderstandings of modernity is the belief that myth and science are enemies. They are not. Bad myth and bad science can both become dangerous, certainly. But disciplined science and symbolic intelligence are not adversaries. One tells us what is possible. The other helps determine what is worthy of being done, remembered, and carried forward.
Without that second layer, exploration becomes logistics.
And logistics alone do not build civilizations.
This is why the naming question is not trivial. It tells us whether a culture still understands that frontiers are not only technical events, but meaningful events. Crossing a boundary requires more than fuel. It requires a language capable of holding risk, scale, wonder, and consequence without falling into either childish fantasy or sterile administration.
NASA, for all its bureaucracy, still seems to understand this better than many institutions supposedly responsible for culture.
It still knows that if you are going to the Moon, you should not go there under a spreadsheet.
You should go there under a name that remembers the sky.
